  2. scholars known as the Fathers of the Church.
  3. His Latin versions of the Old and New
  4. Testaments form the basis of the Roman
  5. Catholic Vulgate. He is usually depicted with
  6. a lion. Feast day 30 Sept. Born in Strido,
  7. Italy, he was baptized at Rome in 360, and
  8. subsequently travelled in Gaul, Anatolia, and
  9. Syria. Summoned to Rome as adviser to Pope
  10. Damasus, he revised the Latin translation of
  11. the New Testament and the Latin psalter. On
  12. the death of Damasus in 384 he travelled to
  13. the east and settled in Bethlehem, where he
  14. translated the Old Testament from Hebrew into
  15. Latin.
